Axe solar system ad so subtle, NASA engineers won't get it.

Most of the mouth-breathing boys who soak their bodies with this crap certainly aren't going to get it. Hillary Clinton might not even get it. John Gray might get it. This is what we call "trying too hard" in the biz. (image via)

I probably wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't for the fact that you told me there was something to get, but now that I do get it, I do like it.

If this was in Maxim or something, I would say it was 100% bad placement, but I could see people liking it (or at least saying they like it) if it was in Wired or Seed or something.

I feel so stupid!
I don't get it. Anyone care to explain to the stupids?

I'm not sure I get it? Mars and Venus (i.e., male and female) together?

Man look how bloated Venus looks next to Mars!

Well, I think it's brilliant, but I had Magic School Bus as a kid. Also, nice of them to give Pluto some love after it's recent demotion. Hang in there, little guy!

My initial thought was that Axe had produced an ad smart enough that it would completely miss their target demo.

Then I thought about it for a moment, and realized that it's much more clever than that - this is a demo-expander ad. Axe has as their main concept "this spray will make chicks want to jump you". Having worked in the scientific field for years, I can say for certain that the guys who will understand this ad at first glance are also (99% overlap) the guys who are clueless enough about chicks that they will buy that concept in a big way.

My first thought was, “Are they trying to say you’ll have heavenly bodies orbiting Uranus?”

Then I had to look up a map of the solar system to figure that that Venus doesn't usually dry hump Mars.

Oh, see now I feel stupid. I thought it was something about all the planets being aligned or something...

I feel ashamed that I got it.

i saw the 2 planets humping. i think the fact that they're mars and venus are just a bonus. you get it anyway. and if you're smart, you get the bonus.

and thanks for putting the magic school bus theme song in my head.

I'm currently putting Wing's "Venus & Mars" into rotation. "Llisten to What the Man Said", "Rock Show" and all that. Groovy.

The really geeky among us noticed that, while Pluto was there, the other two minor planets were not, and that the scale was way off.

(The geekiest of us noticed the typo: "trying to hard")

I know this ad is supposed to be clever, but I think it's a bit lame.

I love the ad and appreciate all the funny comments here! Especially the astrology/astronomy references.

NOT A REAL AD.

Anyway, I'd prefer to Venus in Uranus.

Heh. It's better than anything *else* I've seen in an Axe campaign.

I respectfully disagree that the people who would get this ad are so clueless as to believe that Axe works.

The stuff is NASTY.

I created an identical ad for Earth Day, 2002. Except Earth had a party hat.

Won awards.

Remarkable resemblance.

Just sayin'.

Sorry, an error on the date of that.

It was Earth Day, 2004.

Still a remarkable resemblance, boys. Still just sayin'.
