(this is the first in a series of photos of unusual window displays around New York)

Welcome to Zamir Furs, on Houston St. Have you walked past the store before? Have you wondered whether the furs on the Barbie®-esque dolls are real? Well, they are. The French woman who answered the phone said, "Ze best thingsz in life are always real..." I didn't ask what kind, though. Rat? Cat? Coyote?

Believe it or not, this is one of my favorite window displays in the city. Who doesn't love 20 fur clad barbies lined in a row.

METRO NEWS BRIEFS: NEW YORK CITY; 6 Fur Coats Stolen From a Shop in SoHo

Published: February 16, 1998
Four thieves stole six fur coats from a SoHo shop yesterday but fled in such haste that one dropped his eyeglasses after the angry furrier fought back, the police said.

Two of the thieves were allowed into Zamir Furs, at 90 West Houston Street, at noon yesterday and then held the door open for two accomplices, who began taking fur coats from the racks and passing them outside, said Detective Robert Samuel, a police spokesman.

But they scrambled to leave when the owner, Zahava Kohen, began to struggle with one of the thieves who was holding the door open, the police said. The thieves tried to steal 10 coats but dropped 4 as they fled, Ms. Kohen said. One dropped a pair of eyeglasses, the police said.

The six coats they got away with were worth $30,000 to $40,000, Ms. Kohen said. The police said that the thieves fled in a white Lexus that was parked outside the shop.

Wow. Someone must have murdered and stuffed the Teletubbies and put them on display in a storefront as an example to the gays.
